Born, raised, educated and worked in Beijing for the first 29 years of her life, Chenchen Liu is currently the project officer at the Section of Science, Technology and Education Section at the Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing.
Chenchen Liu joined the Embassy in December 2009. During the past 4 years, she has been working extensively with universities and research institutes in China and Switzerland, promoting Swiss higher education and research excellence in China, connecting Swiss institutions with Chinese counterparts and building a Chinese student community of “friends of Switzerland”. She has a keen interest in China’s education and research landscape and takes advantage of such interests by producing quality policy reports for the Swiss stakeholders. Her latest research topics include vocational education reform, university entrance examination reforms and technology startups landscape in China.
Prior to joining the Embassy, Chenchen Liu spent one year at the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees’ Regional Office in Beijing (2009), first as a full time intern and later offered a short-term contract. At UNHCR, she was part of the Protection Team, working closely with the highly special refugee community in Beijing. Her main responsibilities include interview & consultation with refugees and regular communication with local security authorities.
Despite her “entirely Beijing” background, Chenchen Liu was able to comfortably adapt to global mentality thanks to the learning experience at Beijing Foreign Studies University, where she completed her bachelor studies in English literature (class 2003) and master in American Society and Culture Studies (class 2007). Benefiting from the free academic environment of the university, she was able to immerse herself not only in language and cultural studies but also in radical and controversial class discussions on international affairs, politics, diplomacy and social affairs. Besides academic activities, she was also an active member of the university’s student press during school years.
In her spare time, Chenchen Liu enjoys reading, trekking, photography and playing guqin (a Chinese seven string pluck music instrument). Her recent favorite leisure is taking Massive Online Open Courses. She is very proud of being a Beijinger and is a passionate fan of the local basketball and football teams.
