Risk Talk on the Sharing Economy

19 Nov 2015

Organised by: Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd
Location: Rüschlikon/Zurich, Switzerland

About the event

The term sharing economy refers to the use of goods that would otherwise be idle or unused in exchange for payment. Approximately 10% of residents in the US are already participating in the sharing economy. While only 5% of the population in Europe currently participates, considerable growth is expected in the near term, with nearly one-third of consumers indicating that they will take part.

The growth of the sharing economy has been accelerated by new mobile and internet technologies. Uber, which allows consumers with smartphones to submit a trip request that is then routed to Uber drivers who use their own cars, and Airbnb, a service that allows users to list, find, and rent lodging, are just two examples of companies that have come to define the sharing economy.

Some believe the idea of collaborative consumption is here to stay because it represents how milennials want to consume. At the Risk Talk,  we will explore Uber's business model and why it has been so successful. We will also discuss how the sharing economy impacts employment and how it will shape the future of work. Finally, we will address how the sharing economy will force insurance to evolve.

The sharing economy is not just about renting out your spare room or offering someone a lift. It is an industry that is attracting billions of dollars of investment as evidenced by the huge stock market valuations of sharing platforms. It underlines the disruptive potential of sharing economics – and the adjustments established companies will be forced to make to accommodate truly consumer-driven demand.
