Collaborations

The Swiss Re Institute works with selected research partners to explore the future of risk coverage, to assess changes in the risk landscape and to act as a catalyst for industry change.

The Swiss Re Institute involves a large number of disciplines, building external partnerships to aid collaboration with research institutions on key projects.

Flood risk Brazil

Flood risk Brazil

On average over the past decade, 120 people have lost their lives as a result of floods in Brazil per year. And economic losses have amounted to USD 250 million. In 2010, these peaked at USD 950 million. As a result of growing urban areas and the effects of climate change, the population at risk is likely to rise from an estimated 33 million to 43 million people between 2010 and 2030. Along with the planned substantial investments and the corresponding growth of exposed values, we estimate the annual expected losses to increase from USD 1.4 billion to USD 4 billion over this period. The southeastern, southern and northeastern states of Brazil are likely to be most affected by flooding.
