17 Oct 2016

Raffaello D'Andrea, Professor of Dynamic Systems and Control at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) gave the opening keynote presentation on "The coming machine revolution" at the 'Insurance in the age of drones' conference at the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue. "We're at an interesting point in time right now with the conference of many technological advancements that allows creation of new types of autonomous systems; mobile robots, ground robots, but also flying machines; drones. Drones are a special case of this revolution in autonomous systems. The capabilities of drones are rapidly improving. There are some challenges that need to be overcome, specifically safety, reliability, and operating costs. I think those are some of the things we need to address before they can become widespread.

I think it's important for people to understand what the key issues are with a new type of technology, and we're inundated with information about what's important and what's not. It's important for folks like me that are experts in the area to really give their perspective on what we think is important, and what is going to be important maybe even more so in a couple of years.

Where there's risk, there's the ability to insure that risk. I think it's a new area for insurance companies to be interested in. I also think that they can use that technology, itself, to help them in their day to day job, like monitoring damage, for example"
